Dr. Lawrence Brown, Jr. was appointed to the CCAC in 2019 and holds the position of representing the general public. In 2022 Dr. Brown became the chairperson of the CCAC.
A life member of the American Numismatic Association, Dr. Brown has collected coins since age of 12, focusing on United States modern circulating and commemorative coins. Now focusing on modern circulating and commemorative coins, Dr. Brown traces his fascination with coins back to his adolescence in Brooklyn, New York, where he found himself stimulated by the various ways in which history could be captured on such a small canvas.
An addiction medicine physician with academic distinctions from various medical and scientific professional organizations, Dr. Brown has served as an advisor to various federal and state agencies.
A graduate of Brooklyn College, Dr. Brown received a combined M.D. from New York University and a master’s in public health from Columbia University. He completed an internal medicine residency at Harlem Hospital and a neuroendocrinology fellowship at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. With an academic appointment at Weill Medical College, Cornell University, Dr. Brown is the former Chief Executive Officer at START Treatment & Recovery Centers, treating patients with substance use disorders.
The American College of Physicians, New York Academy of Medicine, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and CPDD bestowed the distinction of Fellow on Dr. Brown, and ASAM bestowed the recognition of Distinguished Fellow. Dr. Brown is also Medical Advisor to the National Football League, and was honorably discharged by the U.S. Army, having received a Bronze Star for meritorious service in the Republic of Vietnam.
